MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN - CHRISTMAS 2009
The 2009 show was once again very successful with 18 packs of Foxhounds entered on the Thursday and 14 packs of Beagles on the Friday.
The attendance by supporters and members of the public continues to increase and the Grandstand and Ringside were crowded, which is encouraging. The interest and curiosity shown by the public enlarges each year and can hopefully only help in our fight for Repeal and the success of the Hound Show. Please help to keep this event going by renewing your membership next year and also encouraging others to do so and become Vice Presidents. It is now a condition of entry that at least one Master of a pack showing is a Vice President of the Hound Show. As I have said before, a Vice President's subscription offers tremendous value with admission and car parking for all three days of the South of England Show.
The Hound Show website, www.soehoundshow.co.uk is flourishing and we are grateful to Nick Onslow who manages it. Ginni Beard who lets us display her lovely photographs on the site, without charge now has her own website www.ginnibeard.com - do have a look, you may have been captured! Up to date news and information will be available as it occurs. If you would like a link to the site, please contact Viki. Schedules for the 2010 show will be available in the spring online and in hard copy and it is also our intention to receive entries online.
Our caterers, Picnic Anywhere, ably run by Sarah Saunders, provided us with the excellent sit-down lunches and good service in the hut and we look forward to working with them again next year. Lunch tickets will carry on being available pre-show and Hunt Staff of packs showing will continue to be allocated two packed lunches.
Ro Jennings and Sara Subtil provided the packed lunches and delicious refreshments outside the hut, which as always proved very popular. Thank you to them and indeed all who help prepare beforehand, on the show days and after the show especially, Viki Ellinger and Gary Lee; without their input the Hound Show would not be what it is.
I think our hospitality tent, where we are well cared for by Sue Skinner and her team, has also proved to be a success judging by the attendance! However for those wondering who the chosen few are, it should be for judges, sponsors and invited guests only!! New, additional sponsors for 2010 will be warmly welcomed!
Robin Mackenzie stirred us all again organising three days of Hound displays in the main ring of the Showground, culminating with the wonderful cavalcade of the nine South East packs of Foxhounds on the Saturday. We also lend our Hound Show area on Saturday to the Countryside Alliance for their various field sports displays and our thanks go to them for their continued support.
I would also like to thank the South of England Agricultural Society for their support and help with the Hound Show and for their determination that Hunting continues to be strongly represented at the South of England Agricultural Show.
The accounts showed a slight increase in the surplus over expenditure, mainly thanks to our existing generous sponsors, in turn giving a slight increase in the bank balance. We would welcome any new sponsors for 2010. The Committee have agreed that accounts will now be available by request from Viki, rather than be sent. This will save on paper, printing and the ever rising postage costs.
It is with regret that I report the death of Robin Barber, who for so many years certified our accounts with his inimitable enthusiasm and humour. Our best wishes go to his wife Chris who will always be welcome at the Hound Show. The accounts this year will be checked by Philip Hentsch of Richard Place Dobson LLP and we are grateful to Philip for taking this task on.
The following have agreed to judge at the Show in 2009:
Foxhounds Dog Hounds: Henry Berkeley MFH and Countess Goess-Saurau MFH
Bitches: Simon Clarke Esq and Linda Armbrust MFH (
Beagles: Kevin Price MH and Stephen Duckmanton - others to be confirmed check website.
I very much look forward to seeing you on the 10th and 11th June 2010 and take this opportunity to wish you a very happy Christmas and great sport in the New Year.
APS - December 2009
P.S. from Secretary:
I would just like to take this opportunity thank the Chairman for all his work behind the scenes, particularly on site, preparing the area for the Show. His attention to detail is second to none and he and Gary have virtually rebuilt the beloved hut, manicured the ring and kept the kennels and bar area standing, when they have threatened to collapse. Thanks must also go to the Lee and Sandeman wives and offspring for those all round final tweaks.
Finally and most importantly, my sincere thanks to all the volunteers who give their time so generously and make the Show run smoothly. It really is a team effort, thank you all.
